Exploring The Decor & Design Show in Melbourne: A Journey of Inspiration

I recently had the pleasure of spending two days in the vibrant city of Melbourne for the Decor and Design Show 2024 . The trip from Sydney was undoubtedly worth it, offering an enriching experience that left me inspired and invigorated. As an interior designer, the opportunity to engage with industry leaders, discover innovative products, and connect with fellow creatives was truly invaluable.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the show was meeting my current suppliers face-to-face. Typically, our interactions are confined to phone calls or emails, so it was wonderful to put faces to the voices I’ve grown accustomed to. Additionally, I had the pleasure of meeting a host of new artists and brands that I am eager to collaborate with in future projects.

Spending hours on my feet, immersed in discussions about new products, materials, and innovations in design and architecture, was invigorating. Topics such as sustainability, market trends, and cutting-edge design solutions dominated the conversations. The enthusiasm and passion within the design community were palpable, reminding me why I fell in love with this field.

Furniture from Mark Tuckey

Many attendees were intrigued by my Belgian background and the European design sensibilities I bring to the Australian market. Having been born and raised in Belgium, I graduated from Saint-Luc Architecture in Brussels in 2011 and subsequently worked as an interior architect for the government of Brussels. There, I was responsible for the maintenance and renovation of 60 public buildings, ranging from heritage museums to schools and sports halls. This diverse experience honed my skills and deepened my appreciation for sustainable and innovative design.

Reflecting on my experiences, I recalled a significant project I worked on in Brussels over a decade ago. My team and I completed the renovation of a sustainable development building with triple-glazed windows and 50 cm thick walls, eliminating the need for artificial cooling in summer and heating in winter. This contrasted sharply with a recent encounter in Sydney, where a builder suggested compromising on insulation to save costs. Such moments underscore the importance of prioritising quality and sustainability in design, values I hold dear.

At the Decor and Design Show, I was reminded of the importance of working with clients and collaborators who share my commitment to the creative process, craftsmanship, and sustainability. The meaningful conversations I had reaffirmed my desire to support individuals and businesses that value hard work, respect, and the worth of every person involved in the design journey.

The show itself was a treasure trove of inspiration. I was captivated by the exquisite pieces from Friday Crafted, whose quality and design are exceptional. Kwerk's premium quality and high-end design left me dreaming of the day I can incorporate their stunning pieces into my work. Sawdust Bureau's timber and gold starmap box is a brilliant idea for a unique and meaningful gift, perfect for special occasions. Business & Pleasure Co.'s beach and outdoor collection transported me to the Mediterranean coast with its fun, retro, and sophisticated designs. I fell in love with Mark Tuckey's oxo coffee table, a standout piece that would elevate any space. Woodflex’s innovative products and John Trif's vibrant contemporary photographs added dynamic elements to the show. Lastly, Uniqwa Collection’s new pieces blend contemporary touches with their signature rustic and bohemian style, creating pieces that are simply gorgeous.

My trip to Melbourne has left me brimming with inspiration and excitement to bring fresh, innovative ideas to my projects. If you share a passion for thoughtful design, sustainability, and craftsmanship, I would love to connect with you. Together, we can create spaces that are not only beautiful but also meaningful and enduring.
